Blu-Ray & Indie Film Distribution, 4K Coming Soon

A conversation I had today with a filmmaker made me write this blog and it's a question I get asked a lot. Should we go to Blu-Ray & DVD or just DVD with our movie? Blu-Ray is a great format with awesome possibilities, but is a very tough market especially for the indie filmmaker. The manufacturing process to replicate Blu-Ray's in a factory is much more costly than DVD, because of the licensing fees and unlock codes you have to pay to the BDA (Blu-Ray Disc Association). Who's the BDA you ask? Mostly Sony I'm pretty sure...

So you've got much higher startup costs, currently around $2,500.00 per title, then you have the actual manufacturing costs. But it gets worse from there, because the bigger studios have been trying to push Blu-Ray on the consumers, they keep lowering the price of the discs to try and get people to splurge on the expensive HDTV setups. It's tough for an indie movie to enter the marketplace at $24.95, with virtually no advertising supporting them, and compete with a large studio release for $5.99 and national advertising. I was in Fry's a couple of weeks ago and saw a kiosk on Blu-Ray discs for $5.99 each. They weren't brand new releases, but studio catalog titles from about five years ago.

The Blu-Ray market is also much smaller than DVDs. Last I read Blu-Ray was doing about 18% of the business DVDs are doing as a whole.

There was an indie retro-label that launched and was planning to do nothing but Blu-Ray's with fully restored transfers of old cult horror films. They folded after their initial release.

So I say enter the Blu-Ray market with trepidation. I always suggest selling direct to customers with BD-R's if you want to offer Blu-Ray's of a small indie movie.

Interestingly enough as slow as Blu-Ray has been growing, but it is growing, Sony & LG announced the arrival of 4K resolution Blu-Ray Discs.

"Sony and LG are gearing up for new Blu-Ray discs that offer 'Ultra HD' definitions far higher than normal Full HD, such as 4K - four times higher than normal HD, and near the resolutions offered in Imax theatres.

'We're expecting the arrival of 4K Blu-rays in 2013,' said John Taylor, LG's Vice President of Communications told website Pocket-Lint."

Service Deal or No Deal?

First off let me apologize for the fact I haven't written a blog post in the last two weeks, we got wrapped up in Holiday affairs. But we're back on schedule now, at least until Christmas...

Let's talk about service deals. If you don't know what a service deal it's where you press and ship your own product and pay a distributor to place the film in their catalog, stores, theaters, digital outlets etc. www.FilmBaby.com is probably the most well known and reputable service deal distributor in the home video world. Where www.FreeStyleReleasing.com is probably the most famous service deal distributor in the theatrical business. The little known secret is most labels and studios handle service deals, but they just don't advertise it. We've offered service deals in the past.

Now a lot of people say "I'm not going to pay for distribution!" My question is why not, you paid to make your indie film or borrowed the money to do so. So why the refusal to pay for distribution? Think about it for just a second, if you are pressing your own product and shipping it for the distributor, you have a lot more control then someone who licensed a film to a distributor. If the distributor owes you money and is late on payment, you have some leverage, you can stop shipping product.

Service deals are a great option especially if you have been turned down by the traditional distributors. That's how we launched our distribution label. We had taken our catalog out to the larger wholesalers and labels and couldn't get any deals we liked. So we signed (or paid) for two different service deals, one worked out very well and was quite lucrative and one did absolutely nothing for us. But the thing is we believed in our titles, as I'm sure you believe in your film, and if no one is willing to distribute your film you should be willing to put the cash into your film to get it to the market. Let's face it, no one can predict what film is going to sell or big studios would never have hundred million dollar flops.

The other thing about service deals is you'll learn exactly how the distribution machine works first hand. Plus some of the contacts we made through our service deals were invaluable. Many we still keep in contact with today.

So next time you put together a budget for an upcoming project, set a side a chunk for service deal distribution, it's always a great contingency plan if nothing else.

The Hi-Speed of Digital Distribution for Indie Films

Everyone is talking about how digital distribution (online streaming/downloads) is the future of independent film distribution and revenue streams. It is true that it is becoming a major force in the world of revenue streams for indie filmmakers, but it is one s-l-o-w machine.

What I didn't realize and I'm sure most indie filmmakers/start-up labels don't realize is that there is a huge bottleneck in the digital distribution pipeline. If you're working deals directly with digital distribution outlets like Itunes, Netflix, Hulu, etc. Then you have to deliver different files to each outlet and here's the big bottleneck, they have to be approved by each outlet's Quality Control department. Since your film is a small indie film you get pushed to the bottom of the pile, because the big studios need to have their films hit their release dates on time. If everything goes well, it can take up to 90 days or longer for your film to go live on a given digital platform, but if there was a problem with your film in the quality control department, you're back to square one.

There are literally hundreds of digital platforms out there, with new one's opening up and going out of business on a daily basis. So dealing with digital outlets on an individual basis for most filmmakers or smaller distribution labels is almost an impossible task. There is a solution, there are digital aggregators out there like Craze Digital, The Orchard and many more who deal with all the platforms for indie labels and then take a cut. Most of all the major wholesale distributors these days are dealing with a lot of the digital outlets as well.  The other nice thing about dealing with aggregators is that you only have to deliver one file to them and they in-turn deliver to the other outlets.

The downside to aggregators is they take a decent percentage of the revenue coming in and just like the platforms they will have priority titles that will be put ahead of yours. So you end up at the bottom of two piles, not just one. The other benefit to aggregators is since they move so much content through the digital platforms you usually will get a break on encoding costs. Yep, even if Itunes accepts your movie there is an encoding fee of around $450 for Itunes to encode your film to their specs.

With every indie filmmaker, distribution label, major studio and aggregator out there submitting titles to the major digital platforms at the same time, you bet there is a big bottleneck in the quality control and encoding departments. It's a slow process, that can be very beneficial for an indie film, but don't plan on hitting your planned release date. Currently I have heard that Roku Streaming has literally hundreds of new channels in que waiting to go live at any given time. That's channels, each with over 100 titles, not just individual films.

Retail is Dead? Indie Film Distribution in 2012

My name is Jonathan Morken, for those of you who don't often read my blog, and I run Apprehensive Films an indie distribution label/production company. My blog generally consists of posts about what Apprehensive Films is up to, our new releases, fundraisers, merchandise, new projects etc. But I've decided that on Fridays I'm going to be writing a post about the different distribution questions I get and the current state of indie film distribution as I see it.

I got into distribution six years ago after making many short films, music videos and a feature length documentary. My reason for starting the distribution label was to control my films and be able to work backwards. If I knew what a release could actually make, what it would take to get a release onto cable and into major retailers, then I could plan the films we produce in-house around that and we would have a really good shot at turning a profit and making another film. Six years later the plan is working. Apprehensive Films now has full blown North American distribution. We get our projects out to major retail, cable, all the major digital outlets, all the major online retailers and we have international representation. As of last week we just wrapped principal photography on our first in-house produced project that is based on our current level of distribution.

Now that we're through with the introductions I want to talk about an issue I hear coming up all the time. Distributors and Filmmakers complaining about how retail is dead and there is no money to be made through traditional home video distribution. I'll be the first to admit that retail has taken a big hit, but it's definitely not dead. Sure Hollywood Video is gone, Blockbuster lost some stores, Best Buy shrunk their DVD selection, but there is still a lot of open market out there.

There are 33,000 redboxes in the US, there are 4,700 Walmart Stores, 600+ Barnes & Nobles stores, tons of small indie record store chains across the country, thousands of comic book stores. The list goes on and on.

We just had a Halloween themed release that sold over 4,000 copies last month. But only 180 of those went through Amazon.com, the largest internet retailer, 3,000 of those sold units went to a major retailer in Canada. Our release was an indie release with no major talent and no major marketing campaign. But it still was able to catch the eye of major retailers, how? It was timed with a major holiday, had great cover artwork and quality content.

The market is flooded with too many indie films, but you can set yourself apart by making a quality project and coming up with a way to market the project so you don't have to have major stars or marketing campaigns. One of our most successful releases, that continues to sell is Hardware Wars, simply because it was the first parody of the most popular film ever made. Hardware Wars has never had a multi-million dollar ad campaign, but it is arguably the most successful short film of all time.

We're going to be pitching our Halloween release from this year to Spirit Halloween Stores (700 nation-wide) and Halloween City (400 nation-wide) for next year.

We also have been handling a documentary on fly fishing for a number of years and we sold a ton of DVDs to fly fishing shops.

I don't think retail is dead, it's sure not what it was in the hey day of VHS sales, but it is still a very large market I think a lot of filmmakers and labels alike are tending to count out prematurely.

Come See The 420 Triple Feature This Friday (4/20) at The Crest Theater

"Puff, puff, don’t pass this up!" - Louis Fowler, CineFiles

For all you Sacramento/Northern California residents there is no better way to celebrate 420 than at the Crest Theatre on 4/20/12 with Apprehensive Films at the screening of the 420 Triple Feature!

Apprehensive Films will be hosting the 420 Triple Feature screening at the Crest Theatre on April 20th at 11pm, 2012. The Crest Theatre is located at 1013 K Street in Downtown Sacramento. Tickets are $10.50 each. The event will be hosted by Stand-Up Comedian Keith Lowell Jensen. This screening is proudly presented by Common Roots Medical Marijuana Collective and Trade School.

The 420 Triple Feature: 420 is an internationally recognized holiday and daily excuse for Stoners, Pot Heads and even the recreational marijuana user to light up, toke up and blaze a blunt on their way to the euphoric High-Way of mental freedom. Or is it an evil path to mental anguish, despair, desperation, crime and even death? The 420 Triple Feature takes on a trip down memory lane with some of the best, most idiotic, hilarious and downright absurd "educational" films on the subject of marijuana use. The three films to be shown are Drug Addiction (1951), Keep Off the Grass (1969) and Marijuana (1968) hosted by Sonny Bono!

Big News for the 420 Triple Feature Release!!

The 420 Triple Feature release is shaping up to be one of most successful releases to date.

First off today is the official release date of the DVD! Available at Fry's Electronics stores, Dimple Records (for those of you in the Sacramento area) and of course www.TheGrindHouse.Net among many, many other websites.

The 420 Triple Feature has been picked up for national Cable/Satellite VOD through Gravitas Ventures and will be available in 18 million+ homes starting on 4/20/12!!

www.LoveFilm.com has picked up the release for rentals in the UK. LoveFilm is owned by Amazon and pretty much operates exactly like Netflix, or at least how Netflix used to operate.

We just got another cool review from the good folks at Cinema Retro They seemed to very much enjoy the disc with it's "Groovy Psychedelic Packaging" and "Unintentionally Hilarious" collection of propaganda movies!

Also, we have some really big news for those who live in the Sacramento region. On 4/20/12 at 11pm you'll be able to catch the 420 Triple Feature on the big screen at The Crest Theater. The show is being hosted by stand-up comedian Keith Lowell Jensen and is sponsored by Common Roots Medical Marijuana Collective and Trade School!
